School Visits
I spend a lot of my spare time not just working on new stories, but also promoting my books. This is done mainly by visiting schools, nurseries, pre-schools and other early years settings. I have visited many schools over the past 2 years, reading my stories, introducing the children to the characters and talking about the importance of reading and writing. It is fun explaining how a picture book is actually made, especially as most children only get to see the finished book sitting on a shelf in a bookshop , library or in the classroom book corner. Because I also produce the illustrations, I can show the original pictures in my sketchbook and explain the transition from paintings in a sketchbook, to finished picture book.
I think it is important to encourage writing and illustration not just in the classroom, but also at home. To do this I bring along many different activity sheets that go with the books, ready to be photocopied and used to coincide with my visit. My stories work very well in classrooms, especially if your planning includes photography, animals, nature and under the sea. So as a bonus on this page I am including 2 free downloadable activity writing frames, one for each book. The children can use these to write their own stories. Maybe they can think of other animals and sea creatures, Billy might meet on his adventures.
Because I am based in South Yorkshire, I do only tend to cover the South Yorkshire / North Derbyshire area for school visits. So get in touch through my contact page for more information, if you are interested and would like me to visit.
